Step-by-Step FAFSA Tips for a Successful Application
The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form is an essential tool that can help you access various types of federal student aid, including grants, work-study funds, and loans. By filling out and submitting the FAFSA form, you can unlock the largest source of student aid available, which can help you pay for college or career/trade school.
Not only that, but your FAFSA information may also be used by your state or college to assess your eligibility for state or school-based aid. Private aid providers may also review your FAFSA information to determine if you qualify for their aid. The best part is that completing and submitting the FAFSA form is completely free, and the process is now easier than ever before.
For the 2025-2026 FAFSA cycle, all contributors—including the student, spouse, biological or adoptive parent, or the parent’s spouse—must create an FSA ID before they can complete their section of the FAFSA form. This requirement is part of ongoing efforts to streamline the FAFSA process and improve data accuracy.
Contributors are individuals who must provide information, give consent for the IRS to transfer federal tax data to the FAFSA form, and sign the form using their FSA ID. This FSA ID includes both a username and password and is essential for accessing the FAFSA form on StudentAid.gov.
One key update for the 2024-2025 and 2025-2026 FAFSA forms is that all contributors must have a StudentAid.gov account, even if they don’t have a Social Security Number (SSN). Without an FSA ID, a contributor cannot access or sign the FAFSA form, potentially delaying the student’s financial aid application.
These changes are designed to enhance the security and efficiency of the financial aid process, ensuring that all necessary data is accurately and securely transmitted from the IRS to the FAFSA form.
